Console Table

Rich, bold, and stylish living room table

Raw Slab Lightly Sanded

Utilizing a piece of clear oak from the LED shelving project, I decided to make a sleek, functional living room table.

Finishing

I used a router to fillet the edges of the table. Next, I began with 100 grit sand paper and went all the way up to 220 with my orbital sander. This process was enjoyable, seeing and feeling the progression in the wood. The wood grain became apparent and I love how the rings line up with the top surface from the side edge.

I used a mocha colored stain on the fully sanded slab and wiped away the excess. The result was a color that brings out the wood grain and creates a distinct contrast.

Polyurethane Coating

To seal the slab, I applied three layers of polyurethane and sanded with 220 grit to knock down the imperfections after each coat by hand. Not only does this ensure a flat surface for the next coat, it creates a slightly rough surface so that the next layer has enough adhesion.

I installed four hairpin legs to complete the table at a comfortable height for sitting.
